Squatters and trespassers

An unauthorised occupant of a property is technically a trespasser in civil law (not a squatter in the historic sense of adverse possession, which requires 10+ years of continuous occupation). Police have limited powers to remove trespassers; the civil eviction process is slow and costs £3,000-8,000 in legal fees. Specialist buyers exist who purchase properties with occupants.
