Repossession
The legal process by which a mortgage lender takes possession of a property when the borrower defaults. The lender's solicitors apply to the court for a possession order, which can take 6-12 months from first missed payment. The property is then sold at auction, typically below market value, with the borrower liable for any shortfall. A voluntary sale before possession avoids the credit-file impact.
